Free SAT Math Practice Questions

Work through six original questions, choose an answer on paper, then open each explanation. These short sets help you spot skills to review; they are not full-length tests or SAT score predictions.

How to use this practice set

  1. Answer each question before revealing its solution. Write down why you chose your answer.
  2. Check both the explanation and the common mistake, even when you answered correctly.
  3. Record the skill behind each missed question. Review that topic, then solve the question again without looking.

The questions cover the four Math domains in the College Board content outline. These are independent Prepvora examples, not official College Board questions.

Algebra

1. Linear equations

A bike rental costs $12 plus $8 per hour. The total cost is $52. For how many hours was the bike rented?

  1. 4
  2. 5
  3. 6
  4. 8
Show answer and explanation for question 1

Answer: B. 5

Let h be the number of hours. Then 12 + 8h = 52. Subtract 12 to get 8h = 40, then divide by 8: h = 5. Check: 12 + 8(5) = 52.

What to watch for: Subtract the fixed fee before dividing by the hourly rate. Dividing 52 by 8 counts the fixed fee as riding time.

Algebra

2. Systems of equations

The equations x + y = 11 and 2x + 3y = 28 describe a system. What is the value of y?

  1. 3
  2. 5
  3. 6
  4. 8
Show answer and explanation for question 2

Answer: C. 6

Double the first equation to get 2x + 2y = 22. Subtract it from the second equation: y = 6. Then x = 5; both original equations are satisfied.

What to watch for: The question asks for y, not x. Label the quantity you need before solving.

3. Quadratic equations

If x² − 7x + 12 = 0, what is the greater solution?

  1. 3
  2. 4
  3. 7
  4. 12
Show answer and explanation for question 3

Answer: B. 4

Factor the expression: (x − 3)(x − 4) = 0. The solutions are 3 and 4, so the greater solution is 4.

What to watch for: The two numbers in the factors multiply to 12 and add to −7. Remember to compare both solutions.

Advanced Math

4. Exponential growth

A model gives a population after t years as P(t) = 500(1.08)ᵗ. What annual percent increase does this model represent?

  1. 0.08%
  2. 1.08%
  3. 8%
  4. 108%
Show answer and explanation for question 4

Answer: C. 8%

For growth, the multiplier is 1 + r, where r is the rate as a decimal. Here r = 1.08 − 1 = 0.08, which is 8%.

What to watch for: A multiplier of 1.08 means 108% of the previous amount, so the increase is 8%, not 108%.

Problem-Solving and Data Analysis

5. Percent change

A jacket priced at $80 is discounted by 25%. A 10% sales tax is then applied to the discounted price. What is the final price?

  1. $58
  2. $60
  3. $66
  4. $68
Show answer and explanation for question 5

Answer: C. $66

After the discount, the price is 80 × 0.75 = 60 dollars. Apply tax to that price: 60 × 1.10 = 66 dollars.

What to watch for: Do not combine the percentages as a single 15% discount. The tax and discount use different base amounts.

Geometry and Trigonometry

6. Right triangles

In a right triangle, an acute angle θ has an opposite side of length 6 and a hypotenuse of length 10. What is sin θ?

  1. 3/5
  2. 3/4
  3. 4/5
  4. 5/3
Show answer and explanation for question 6

Answer: A. 3/5

Sine is opposite divided by hypotenuse. Therefore sin θ = 6/10 = 3/5. The third side is not needed.

What to watch for: Use the sides relative to the marked angle. Opposite over adjacent is tangent, not sine.
