Master the #1 modifier rule tested on every SAT Reading & Writing section.
The rule for dangling modifiers on the SAT: An introductory modifying phrase (such as "Walking through the forest," or "Having completed the experiment,") MUST be immediately followed by the comma and the exact noun performing the action. If the subject is placed elsewhere or omitted, it is a dangling modifier error.
Modifier placement questions appear on every SAT test. Always ask: "Who is doing the action in the introductory phrase?" That person or object must be the subject right after the comma.
"Having won the championship game, the trophy was presented to the team." (The trophy did not win the game).
"Having won the championship game, the team received the trophy." (The team won the game).
Identify the actor in the introductory phrase -> verify that the actor is the very first word following the comma.
Typically 1 to 3 modifier questions appear per Reading & Writing section.
