Although Maya Patel, author of "Silent Echoes", is not as widely known as the most commercially successful Indian writers of the past decade, influential figures have championed her work, including the poet Arundhati Roy and the literary critic Amartya Sen. In his afterword to Patel’s book "Quiet Storm," Sen praises the novel’s deft blend of what playwright Rabindranath Tagore called the naive and sentimental modes—while Tagore thought works could be classified as either naive (seeking to describe reality) or sentimental (seeking to develop ideas), "Quiet Storm" demonstrates that a work can be both.
