ACT scoring — FAQ

How is the ACT scored?+

Each of the four sections (English, Math, Reading, Science) is scored on a 1–36 scale. Your raw score (number correct) is converted to a scaled score using that test form's curve. Your ACT composite is the average of the four scaled section scores, rounded to the nearest whole number.

What is a good ACT score?+

The national average composite is about 19–20. A score of 24+ puts you above the ~75th percentile, 30+ is roughly top 5%, and 33+ is competitive for the most selective colleges.

Is there a guessing penalty on the ACT?+

No. The ACT has no penalty for wrong answers, so you should always fill in an answer for every question — never leave one blank.

How accurate is this ACT calculator?+

It uses a representative conversion curve, so it is a close estimate. The official scale shifts by a point or two per test form, especially at the very top where the last few raw points each cost a scaled point.
