The Transition to College

J

Jaival Tamboli

June 20, 2026

Dropping your child off at college is a massive milestone. The transition from high school to college requires significant adjustment for both the student and the parent.

1. Redefining Your Relationship

Your role shifts from daily manager to adult consultant. Wait for them to ask for advice before offering it. Let them navigate conflicts with roommates or professors independently first.

2. Discussing Expectations Before Move-In

Have clear conversations about finances, communication frequency (e.g., a Sunday phone call vs. daily texting), and academic expectations before you unpack the first box.

3. The Normalcy of Homesickness

Expect a rocky first semester. The "freshman flu," homesickness, and academic adjustments are completely normal. Encourage them to stay on campus on weekends to build their social network rather than coming home immediately when things get tough.
